Prep Volleyball: Sebeka sinks Lady Pirates in five

Sebeka, Minn. (October 15)—As expected, the Park Region Conference showdown between Sebeka and Verndale went down the wire on Tuesday night with the host Lady Trojans coming out on top in the five-set battle that lasted a little over two hours, 3-2.

Verndale opened the match with a 26-24 victory in the first set, but the Lady Trojans rallied to win the next two by 25-20, 25-22 scores. With their backs to the wall, the Lady Pirates took the fourth set in convincing fashion, winning 25-12 to force the fifth and deciding game.

Sebeka took the deciding game 15-10, and with it, sole possession of second place in the Park Region Conference race with a 5-1 mark. Henning went undefeated with a 6-0 record to capture the PRC crown. Verndale finished in third with a 4-2 record.

Heidi Olson led the Lady Trojans with 22 kills and 43 digs. The senior hitter also went 21-for-22 with an ace from the service line. Michaela Hesse collected nine kills and a team-high four blocks in the victory. Jordan Lillquist had eight kills and three blocks.

Madison Lake set up 42 set assists in addition to her three kills, 12 digs and two blocks. She also aced a serve. Alexis Rathcke, Erin Lillquist and Elyse Helland combined for 36 digs for the Lady Trojans in the victory.

Jordyn Glenz led all attackers with a match-high 29 kills for Verndale. The junior middle hitter also registered 28 digs, two ace serves and a set assist in the loss. Shania Glenz smashed 21 kills and also dug up 28 digs. Sarah Moenkedick led the team in digs with 34 and served up six of the Lady Pirates’ 12 aces in the contest. The junior outside hitter also registered nine kills.

Megan Dougherty had 29 set assists and bumped up 21 digs in the loss. Haley Stinar came up with 20 set assists, 11 digs and a pair of aces for the Lady Pirates.

Sebeka (19-4) and Verndale (18-6) will wrap up the regular season at the eight-team Underwood Tournament starting at 9 a.m. on Thursday.
