Multiple Teams · Warriors take down Warroad in the Section Quarterfinals

The UNC Warriors traveled up North on Tuesday to take on the Warroad Warriors in the opening round of the Region 8AA playoffs. UNC jumped out to an early 6-0 lead when Quarterback Caleb Puttonen found Kirby Hrdlicka on a screen pass, and Hrdlicka took it in 9 yards from there. Warroad came fighting back putting together a nice drive that popped open All-Section runningback Noah Herren for a 21 yard Touchdown. That made the score 6-6. Then UNC opened up the second quarter with a one yard plunge by Puttonen making the score 12-6. Then Warroad came back once again with a 5 yard run by Herren, and the conversion to make the score Warroad 14 and UNC 12. That would be the last time Warroad would see the endzone for the night. UNC then came out in the second half with a 39 yard strike from Puttonen to receiver Mason Dailey for another UNC touchdown making the score 18-14 UNC. The score would remain the same for the third quarter. Then in the fourth, UNC opened it up with a one yard score from George Lausten, and another 9 yard TD run from Kirby Hrdlicka. The final score was 30-14 United North Central.

It was a great win for UNC. Any time you get a playoff win is special..and to get a win after a long trip to warroad really says a lot of the guys we have on this football team. I really couldn’t be prouder of the effort and leadership that was displayed on Tuesday night.

Defensively, we had to make some adjustments at halftime. Warroad came out and did some things that really took some of our strengths away, but after half we took away some things to get them out of their comfort zone. I thought hat was the difference in the ball game. Offensively I thought we made some mental errors early that prevented us from putting another score on the board, but in the second half we were able to put it together and finish off drives. I still think we left some points out there with some failed conversions, so we really need to sharpen up in that department.
Overall, With all the adversity we’ve gone through this season, to come out and keep battling every day, every game, is just outstanding. We keep getting better each week, hopefully we can put a full 48 minutes together against the Barnesville Trojans Saturday. Kickoff is set for 2pm in Barnesville.
