The #7 seeded Sebeka Trojans knocked off #2 Menahga 1-0 in Menahga on Tuesday to pull of a huge opening round upset in Sub-Section 5A West baseball. The opening round of the tournament is single elimination so Sebeka now advances to the double-elimination portion and Menahga’s season is over.
Kolby Kiser and Al Pietala locked into a pitcher’s duel in the opening game of the season in Sebeka with Pietala getting the upper hand. This game wasn’t a lot different as runs were at a premium but this time the Trojans were able to come out on top. Sebeka looked like they might score in the second inning with a runner at third base with no outs but Mason Dailey lined into a double play at third base. In the bottom of the second Brandon Miller made a nice running catch to end the inning that saved a possible run as Menahga had a runner on base. Menahga would get their only hit of the game when Pietala would lay down a bunt single in the third but Kiser retired the side after that to escape damage. The Trojans would break through in the fourth inning. Isaac Tellers would open the inning with a walk. Caleb Puttonen would advance him to second on a sacrifice bunt. Noah Stevens moved Tellers to third with a hard single to center. Dailey would not be denied this time as he hit a line drive to center field for a sacrifice fly to score Tellers with the only run of the game. Menahga got the lead off hitter on in the fourth but popped up a bunt into a double play. In the fifth Menahga once again got the lead off hitter on but this time lined into a double play at first. Menahga had a runner on in the sixth but catcher Noah Stevens gunned him down as he tried to steal second. Kiser would handle the seventh cleanly by getting a pop up, a grounder and strike out to earn the complete game one-hit shutout.
Sebeka now advances to play at Hill City on Tuesday, May 30th at 4:30. Win or lose they will play at Deer Creek on Wednesday, May 31st with the opponent to be determined.
